Discover the Maldives: local life on Maafushi and Dhangethi

Maldives

The Maldives consists of 1,192 islands, distributed in 26 atolls, within which there are 187 local islands (where about 521,000 Maldivians live) and 172 private islands, i.e. resorts. The capital, Male, is one of the most densely populated cities in the world, with between 150,000 and 200,000 inhabitants, both locals and many foreign workers, on only 5.8 square kilometers. It represents the administrative and economic center of events, where all the main state institutions are located.

When it comes to religion, Islam is represented in the Maldives and 100% of the local population is of the Islamic religion.

The Maldives has become a popular tourist destination primarily thanks to private resorts since 1972, with the opening of the first resort, while tourism on the local islands began to develop in 2009. As a synonym of paradise on earth, the Maldives has been declared the number 1 destination for the 4th year in a row, which is visited by an average of 2,000,000 tourists annually.

Maafushi

The local island of Maafushi, located in Kaafu Atoll, just 30 minutes by speedboat from the capital, is your home in the Maldives during your stay with us. 1.5 km long and only 300 meters wide, Mafushi is home to roughly 4.000 locals.

Since 2009, tourism began to slowly develop on Maafushi, while today it is visited by about 200,000 tourists a year, which makes it the most famous and most visited local island in the Maldives. It offers a wide range of activity options, both for excursions, water sports and nightlife.

The island is very safe, at any time of the day or night you can walk around the island without a bridge, while the locals are very pleasant and hospitable. They will not force you to sit in a certain restaurant or buy souvenirs in a certain store.

Dhangethi

Dhangethi is a vibrant local island located in the Ari Atoll, known for some of the most stunning natural attractions in the Maldives. The island is small and peaceful, yet rich in local charm and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Its beaches stand out with white sand and a crystal-clear lagoon, perfect for swimming and relaxation.

The island is surrounded by beautiful coral reefs, making it an ideal spot for snorkeling and diving. In its immediate vicinity are some of the most famous locations for encounters with whale sharks and manta rays. That’s why Dhangethi is our chosen base for excursions that reveal the spectacular underwater world of the Ari Atoll.

Although small, the island offers everything needed for a comfortable stay: restaurants, cafés, small shops, and a spacious, well-maintained bikini beach for tourists. The local community is exceptionally hospitable, giving visitors the chance to experience authentic Maldivian island life. Dhangethi is a place where natural beauty, tranquility, and local culture blend seamlessly.

The island is ideal for guests seeking a mix of relaxation, adventure and close connection with local life. With its pleasant atmosphere and excellent location in the heart of the Ari Atoll, Dhangethi provides the perfect base for an unforgettable Maldives experience.

Bikini beach and dress code

Maafushi and Dhangethi have designated bikini beaches. If you wish to swim at other beaches on the islands, it is necessary to wear a T-shirt and shorts, or any other clothing that covers your swimsuit, in order to respect local rules and the culture of the Islamic community. The same rule applies when walking around the island, visiting restaurants and bars – in all areas outside the bikini beach zones, clothing over your swimsuit is required. On the beaches, sunbeds are free of charge; it is enough to order a drink, ice cream, or a meal from the waiters at nearby cafés and restaurants.

SPF

The Maldives is located very close to the equator, so the sun’s rays are very strong. Even when the weather is cloudy, the skin can burn very easily. We advise all guests to use sunscreen during all days of their stay. If you don’t bring it from home, you can find creams with protection factors of even 80, 90 and 100 in stores on Maafushi.

Shops

Maafushi has a large number of markets offering food and drinks, souvenir shops, cosmetic stores, as well as shops selling swimwear, swimming gear, bakeries, and more. Dhangethi has fewer stores, but they are also reasonably well-equipped, including European cosmetic brands. Store hours are influenced by prayer times, so during each prayer, shops are closed for about an hour to an hour and a half. In Maafushi, there are two markets that remain open during prayer times and close at 2:30 a.m. Other stores typically operate until 22:00 or 23:00.

SIM card

In Maafushi, and at the airport as well, there is the possibility of buying a SIM tourist card, with various packages for internet, calls and messages.

Hospital and pharmacy

Maafushi and Dhangethi have a local clinic as well as a pharmacy. When visiting the clinic, it is necessary to bring your personal passport and rufiyaa, as US dollars and euros are not accepted. The pharmacies are well-stocked, but if you have any specific medication prescribed by your doctor, we recommend bringing an adequate supply with you before traveling to the destination.

Bank

On Maafushi and Dhangethi, you can find a bank (Bank of Maldives) with an ATM that operates 24/7. Using Visa and MasterCard, you can withdraw only rufiyaa from the ATM, with a fee of approximately 4 – 5%.

Restaurant prices

Average food prices in restaurants on Maafushi range from $5–6 to $12–15 per meal, while seafood is slightly more expensive, averaging around $30–50 per portion. Drinks generally cost $2–5 for coffee, $5–7 for fresh juices, and $10–12 for non-alcoholic cocktails. Average prices on Dhangethi are lower, with meals costing around $3–5.

According to official law, alcohol is prohibited on the local islands of the Maldives, it is not sold in shops or restaurants. Alcohol can be consumed in resorts, as well as on party boats located near certain local islands. One of them is located a 2 minute drive from Mafushi Island, as well as near by Dhangethi island 😉

Sunrise and sunset

Throughout the year, the sun rises and sets in the Maldives at the same time: sunrise is roughly between 05:00 and 06:00, while sunset is between 17:30 and 18:50.

Nightlife

The local island of Maafushi always offers options for nightlife, such as live music, DJ performances, beach parties on the bikini beach and traditional dance performances – boduberu (a local group of men showcasing Maldivian culture through music and dance). Nightlife on Dhangethi is much quieter, with the occasional live music performance.
